Where I Stand & Blood and Soil is a Two Person Photography Exhibition by Traci Arney and Guggenheim Fellow Rob Amberg.
Traci works in two distinct photographic veins — documentary photography and composite photography — both exploring memory, history, and the traditions that shape identity. Her documentary work focuses on communities and practices that are disappearing, while her composite images build on those themes, layering moments together to reflect how memory reconstructs truth over time.
Blood and Soil looks at the Trexler family and their long-standing hog killing tradition — a practice once rooted in survival and now carried forward as a link to family and heritage. The photographs document a process that is as physical as it is communal, revealing a world where work, memory, and belonging remain intertwined. In these images, the act of turning labor into sustenance becomes a meditation on what endures when traditions begin to vanish.
Exhibited alongside Guggenheim Fellow Rob Amberg’s Where I Stand — a decades-long chronicle of life, kinship, and resilience in the North Carolina mountains — the show opens a dialogue about the changing South: who carries its stories forward, and how those stories are preserved. Together, the two bodies of work reflect the shared rhythms of work, community, and remembrance that bind people to one another and to the land itself.
